The Featured Microorganism Model Currently is: THE CYCLOPS!

These photos of a cyclops were taken from samples from the jar at three different times one in the late spring/early summer, the other in the late fall / early winter, and just now in mid-winter. These are certainly at the top of the food chain in the jar when they are present. They are usually quite fast moving so to get the best photographs of them using methyl cellulose would come in handy. Sometimes they are cooperative though and will stay still for a bit to photo them. Look at that detail! Hope you enjoy: THE CYCLOPS! Because they eat my personal favorite: Rotifers. . . I have a little mixed feelings about these predators! But they are neat to see and photograph even if they do put a little top-down pressure on the rotifer population.

Above is a cyclops larva observed on Feb 7th. You can see it in that video recap and see a bit of its motion as well!
